Most Generac portables run dual fuel, gasoline or liquid propane, switched with a dial. Some add natural gas as a third option. Propane stores indefinitely; a tank sitting in a shed for two years will still start the engine. Gasoline degrades in months and gums up a carburetor, but buys runtime: about ten hours at half load on a full tank against five on a 20 pound propane tank. Keep both on hand.
Two features earn their cost. COsense shuts the engine down when carbon monoxide around the unit climbs, faster than a household detector reacts. PowerRush adds 30 to 40 percent more starting capacity depending on the model, which absorbs the surge from a refrigerator or well pump and often lets a smaller unit do the job. Running a cord from a generator into a wall outlet or dryer receptacle pushes current backward onto the utility line. That is backfeeding. It can kill a lineman working a circuit he thinks is dead, and shutting off the main breaker first does not make it legal.
